In the towering skyscrapers of multinational  companies and corporate giants, where bosses and managers motivate their employees to work as hard as they can, day in, day out, in order to become leaders in the days to come, there lies a problem which feels so miniscule when it comes to the overall profit agendum of the company: Mental Health of the employees.

For years, higher level authorities have been exploiting their employees by overworking them, and employees, working their hearts out, completing targets and following hectic schedules, thinking of it being their duty towards the company’s profits and for its green financial statements. Yet, beneath the facade of corporate achievement, the mental well-being of these employees suffers silently, crushed under the weight of relentless expectations. What they fail to grasp is the toll it exacts on the employees.

Recent data reveals a troubling trend: work-related stress has become the primary source of anxiety for adults in India and globally, steadily increasing over the past few decades. According to Mpower’s 2023 Mental Health at Workplace survey of Delhi, a staggering 82% of employed individuals have taken breaks to recover from stress-related issues. Additionally, 53% report being asked to work on holidays, exacerbating their stress levels.

This constant pressure and demand for productivity contribute to serious health issues such as anxiety and depression, leading some to take drastic measures. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, 2021, states that up to 50 individuals in India take their own lives every week due to career or workplace-related issues.

The constant rumbling of success and profits, stomps upon the mental health of the employees, which are motivated to follow the so called, ‘Hustle Culture’ by their seniors asking for constant busyness and productivity, disregarding the importance of maintaining a balance between work and personal life for overall happiness. The need of the hour is to prioritize the mental health of the employees and constant effort to make their living standard better. This practice will not only benefit the employees, but it’ll be beneficial for the company as a whole.

Employees today are more vocal and aware of the challenges they face, and they are more comfortable sharing their concerns and the companies are also making constant efforts to create more comfortable and supportive work environments for their employees.

Global giants like google, TATA, salesforce, organize Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), offering confidential counseling sessions for its employees.
